Release a number
Gives the number back to the carrier, which can’t be undone: calls and texts to it stop reaching the receptionist. Returns the number at once with release_scheduled_at set; its status then moves to releasing and released, after which the business can claim a new number. A replaced number still in its 30-day window is released at once. A number already being released is returned as it is, and one whose replacement is still being set up is a 409.
